BATON ROUGE ? LSUs season-changing win over No. 10 Marquette on Monday night was barely 10 minutes old, and Coach Trent Johnson already was trying to move on.
I dont want to take away from the guys excitement and enjoyment, but it is just one win, he said after the Tigers defeated the undefeated Golden Eagles 67-59.
Johnson also was aware LSU (8-3) had to be in Denton, Texas, in a few days to play North Texas (6-5). That will be at 7 pm Thursday. Johnson also remembers his team lost by 72-52 to a senior-laden North Texas last season at home.
The sooner we can move forward, the better, Johnson said a day later. Its been a long time for this group, and its been a long time for this basketball team to have a win of that caliber. Thats why, for me, its always about the next day and the next game and things of that nature.
LSUs win over Marquette was its first victory over a ranked team in four years.
I know Im going to do everything in my power and in my staffs power to let these guys understand what were up against, Johnson said. We need to bring the same mental approach, but thats easier said than done.
Freshman 6-foot-8 forward Tony Mitchell, a Dallas native and transfer from Missouri, has averaged 12 points and nine rebounds in two games for North Texas, coached by former LSU player and assistant coach Johnny Jones. Chris Jones, a 6-2 freshman guard, is averaging 15 points and 3.6 assists a game.
LSU is led by 6-11 junior center Justin Hamilton, who is averaging 11.6 points and 6.4 rebounds a game, and sophomore guard Ralston Turner, who is scoring 10.9 a game. The Tigers will be without starting guard Andre Stringer, who continues to be tested after suffering a dizzy and fainting spell two weeks ago.
NOTES: LSU will be going after its sixth straight win ? a feat LSU has not done since winning 10 in a row in the 2008-09 SEC championship season. … LSU has held its last five opponents to fewer than 60 points, something the Tigers have not done since the 2006-07 season.
